Flood Risk Management: Research and Practice: Extended Abstracts Volume (332 pages) + full paper CD-ROM (1772 pages)

Flood Risk Management: Research and Practice: Extended Abstracts Volume (332 pages) + full paper CD-ROM (1772 pages)

Floods cause distress and damage wherever and whenever they happen. Flooding from rivers, estuaries and the sea threatens many millions of people worldwide and economic and insurance losses from flooding have increased significantly since 1990. Across the European Union, flood management policy is changing in response to the EU Directive on the assessment and management of flood risks, which requires a move from flood protection and defence to comprehensive flood risk management.

Flood Risk Management: Research and Practice includes about 200 contributions from the international conference FLOODrisk 2008 (Oxford, UK, 30 September – 2 October 2008). FLOODrisk 2008 was an initiative of the FLOODsite research project on Integrated Flood Risk Analysis and Management Methodologies. FLOODsite was a major “Integrated Project” in the European Commission Sixth Framework Programme; contract number GOCE-CT-2004-505420. The conference provided a forum for leading researchers, flood risk managers, policy makers and practitioners from government, commercial and research organisations to gain an overview of advances in this important subject. Flood risk management practice crosses several professions and disciplines and these are represented in the breadth of the scope of the conference and these proceedings. The conference covered all aspects of flood risk: the causes of floods, their impacts on people, property and the environment, and portfolios of risk management measuresm, while the principal themes included: climate change, estimation of extremes, flash floods, flood forecasting and warning, inundation modelling, systems analysis, uncertainty, international programmes, flood defence infrastructure and assets, environmental impacts, human and social impacts, vulnerability and resilience, risk sharing, equity and social justice, and, civil contingency planning and emergency management.

Flood Risk Management: Research and Practice will be of interest to an international readership, ranging from authorities, consultants and engineers involved in flood management; researchers, post graduate lecturers and students, to policy makers, particularly at national level.

Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease: Guidelines for Assessment and Management of Cardiovascular Risk
This publication provides guidance on reducing disability and premature deaths from coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and peripheral vascular disease in people at high risk, who have not yet experienced a cardiovascular event. People with established cardiovascular disease are at very high risk of recurrent events and are not the subject of these guidelines. They have been addressed in previous WHO guidelines. The risk prediction charts that accompany these guidelines allow treatment to be targeted according to simple predictions of absolute cardiovascular risk.

Project Management wMSProject2007 CD and Student CD

Project Management wMSProject2007 CD and Student CD
As the market-leading textbook on the subject, Project Management: The Managerial Process, 5e is distinguished by its balanced treatment of both the technical and behavioral issues in project management as well as by its coverage of a broad range of industries to which project management principles can be applied. It focuses on how project management is integral to the organization as a whole. The 5th edition reflects the latest changes found in the practice. Other texts discuss the topics covered in this text but they do not view oversight as the project manager’s operating environment, as does Larson/Gray. Resumes of managers will soon be primarily a description of participation in and contributions to projects.

EPA Air Toxics Program on Toxic Air Pollutants, Risk Assessments, Releases, Health Risks, Evaluating Exposures, Carcinogen Risk (CD-ROM)

EPA Air Toxics Program on Toxic Air Pollutants, Risk Assessments, Releases, Health Risks, Evaluating Exposures, Carcinogen Risk (CD-ROM)
This authoritative electronic book on CD-ROM provides a comprehensive guide to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation of toxic air pollutants. Toxic air pollutants, also known as hazardous air pollutants, are those pollutants that are known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects, such as reproductive effects or birth defects, or adverse environmental effects. EPA is working with state, local, and tribal governments to reduce air toxics releases of 188 pollutants to the environment. Examples of toxic air pollutants include benzene, which is found in gasoline; perchlorethlyene, which is emitted from some dry cleaning facilities; and methylene chloride, which is used as a solvent and paint stripper by a number of industries. Examples of other listed air toxics include dioxin, asbestos, toluene, and metals such as cadmium, mercury, chromium, and lead compounds. People exposed to toxic air pollutants at sufficient concentrations and durations may have an increased chance of getting cancer or experiencing other serious health effects. These health effects can include damage to the immune system, as well as neurological, reproductive (e.g., reduced fertility), developmental, respiratory and other health problems. In addition to exposure from breathing air toxics, some toxic air pollutants such as mercury can deposit onto soils or surface waters, where they are taken up by plants and ingested by animals and are eventually magnified up through the food chain. Topics covered include: Reducing Air Toxics in Your Community, Guidebook for Small Businesses, Risk Assessment for Toxic Air Pollutants, Evaluating Exposures, Health Risk, Guidelines for Carcinogen Risk Assessment, Odor Thresholds, Mercury Report to Congress, Toxics Release Inventory, Rules and Implementation, National-Scale Air Toxics Assessment, Risk Studies, Education and Outreach, Pollutants and Sources, Publications. This remarkable CD-ROM is packed with over 33,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software – allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems. The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. Our news and educational discs are privately compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents – they are not produced by the federal government.
